Revised and posted as of December 4, 2007
At goSwoop, our mission is to create a way for students, colleges and universities, and others to share information. In this process, we believe that you should have control over the information that is shared and with whom it is shared, and that you should have access to the information others choose to share with you. Specifically, we allow you to create and manage a personal user profile, and choose both the information you provide and the colleges and universities, and others to which the information is provided.
All profiles are public and accessible to registered users and participating colleges and universities until the privacy settings are changed by the user. Thoughtful use of your privacy settings allows you to make informed choices about who has access to your information. We encourage our users to be smart about their activities on the goSwoop site, since certain aspects may be used by participating colleges and universities in evaluating your application.
The following Privacy Statement summarizes the various ways that goSwoop, LLC (“goSwoop”) treats the information you provide while visiting or using www.goSwoop.com or any other goSwoop site. It is our goal to bring you information that is tailored to your individual needs and, at the same time, protect your privacy. This Privacy Statement does not cover information collected elsewhere, including offline and on sites linked to or from any of our site.
Please read this Privacy Statement carefully. Your use of, accessing, and/or registration on any aspect of our site will constitute your agreement to this Privacy Statement. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use our site. If you have any questions regarding our privacy statement, please feel free to contact us by e-mail at privacy@goswoop.com.
In addition to reviewing this Privacy Policy, please read our Terms of Use. Your use of the site constitutes agreement to its terms and conditions as well.
This Privacy Statement may be modified from time to time; the date of the most recent revisions will appear on this page, so check back often. Any change, update or modification we make will be effective immediately upon posting on our site(s). If we are going to be using the information collected from users in a manner materially different from that stated at the time of collection, we will send affected users written notice of the change by e-mail. Continued access of our site by you will constitute your acceptance of any changes or revisions to the Privacy Statement.
Collection of Personal Information
In general, you may visit our site without identifying yourself or revealing any personal information.
When you register with goSwoop, you provide us with certain personal information, such as your name, your email address, your birth date, your gender, schools attended and any other personal or preference information that you provide to us. These data are submitted voluntarily.
In addition, as you browse our site, we collect log file, IP address of your computer, and other standard tracking data we use to evaluate site traffic and usage patterns. Such information is aggregated with tracking data from all site visitors. We will use the information to personalize our site according to your preferences based on the aggregated information. We also use the aggregated information to evaluate products and services we may offer to you.
You always have the option not to provide the information we request. If you choose not to provide the information we request, you can still visit parts of our site, but you may be unable to access certain options and services.
If you elect to provide us personal information, we use it primarily to deliver the service you requested.
You post user content on our site at your own risk. Although we allow you to set privacy options that limit access to your pages, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable. We cannot control the actions of other users with whom you may choose to share your information. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee that content you post on our site will not be viewed by unauthorized persons. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on our site. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of user content may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other users have copied or stored your user content. Any improper collection or misuse of information provided on our site is a violation of our Terms of Service and should be reported to privacy@goswoop.com.
By using goSwoop, you are consenting to have your personal data transferred to and processed in the United States.
Use of Personal Information
When you register with goSwoop, you create your own profile and privacy settings. Your profile information is displayed to people and institutions in the networks specified in your privacy settings, to enable you to connect with people and institutions on goSwoop.
In addition, limited profile information (e.g., your name, colleges and universities attended, hometown, and town of current residence) will be available in search results across the goSwoop network and those limited pieces of information may be made available to third party search engines. This is primarily so other students and interested institutions can find you. Unless and until you change your default privacy settings, people who see your name in searches will be able to access this limited profile information, even if they do not have a relationship to you.
goSwoop may send you service-related announcements from time to time through the general operation of the service. Generally, you may opt out of such emails by changing your privacy and account settings, though goSwoop reserves the right to send you notices about your account even if you opt out of all voluntary email notifications.
Personal Information Sharing
At goSwoop, our mission is to create a way for students, colleges and universities, and others to share information. We allow you to choose the information you provide, and the colleges and universities to which information is provided. Thoughtful use of your privacy settings allow you to make informed choices about who has access to your information. We share your information with third parties only in limited circumstances where we believe such sharing is reasonably necessary to offer the service, legally required, or permitted by you.
We do not provide contact information to third party marketers without your permission. If we share your personal information with our affiliates and with our partners, we will seek to require all such third parties to follow appropriate privacy policies and will not authorize them to use this information except for the express purpose for which it is provided, but goSwoop does not bear any responsibility for any actions or policies of third parties.
Submitting personally identifying information to our site is your permission for us to share it, in accordance with the account and privacy settings you have selected, and unless such permission is expressly denied by you. You can change your list permission on-line by editing your profile, or by contacting goSwoop at info@goSwoop.com.
In addition, we reserve the right to use the information we collect about your computer, which may at times be able to identify you, for any lawful business purpose, including to help diagnose problems with our servers, to gather broad demographic information, and to otherwise administer our site, or if required to do so by law or in the good faith belief that such action is necessary to conform to the edicts of the law or comply with legal process served on goSwoop or to protect and defend the rights or property of goSwoop, or to enforce our terms of service.
In addition, as our business changes, we may buy or sell various assets. In the event all or a portion of the assets owned or controlled by goSwoop, or any subsidiary or affiliated entity, are sold, assigned, transferred or acquired by another company, the information from and about our site’ users may be among the transferred assets.
Aggregated Information
While your personally identifying information is protected as outlined above, we reserve the right to use, transfer, sell, and share aggregated, anonymous data about our users as a group for any business purpose, such as analyzing usage trends and seeking compatible advertisers and partners.
Information on Children
As a company developing and fostering connections between students and institutions of higher education, we have created and maintain a site that is not intended for use by younger children, particularly those under age 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. In the event that we learn we have collected any personal information from a child under the age of 13 without verification of parental consent, we will delete that information from our database as quickly as possible.
Links
Our site may contain links to other websites, including colleges, suppliers, advertisers and affiliates. We have no control over, and are not responsible for, the content of, or information gathered by, these other websites, or for their privacy practices. We encourage our users to be aware when they leave our site to read the privacy statements of each and every web site that collects personally identifiable information. This Privacy Policy applies solely to information collected by goSwoop.
In addition, users of our site should also be aware that, when you voluntarily disclose personal information in chat areas or bulletin boards, that information may be collected by others and may result in unsolicited messages from others.
Cookies
A “cookie” is a bit of data sent by a website through the browser to the computer of the user visiting a site, and enables that site to return the results the browser expects. We may use temporary, session-specific cookies to ensure visits to our site are smooth and customized for the visitor – for example, to control the display of ads, to track usage patterns on our site, to deliver editorial content, and to record registration and personalization information. If used, such cookies allow us to provide a visitor’s browser with information tailored to the visitor’s preferences and needs. We also may use permanent or persistent cookies that remain on a visitor’s computer after the visitor leaves our site. We use this data on an anonymous basis and we do not correlate this information with personal data of any user.
Most website browsers automatically accept cookies, but you may be able to turn off the cookie acceptance option in your browser’s settings. However, disabling the cookie support function of the browser may prevent some portions of our site from functioning properly, and you may not be able to utilize fully all of our site’s features and information.
We may from time to time use advertising companies to develop banner ads for our site. These ads may contain cookies that may be sent to your browser through the banner ads. We do not have control over cookies placed by our advertisers, nor do we have access to any information their cookies may collect.
Opt-Out Option
Visitors to our site can decide if they want to receive targeted promotional information from goSwoop or targeted promotional information sponsored by our marketing partners. By changing account and privacy settings, site visitors can request that we not e-mail them advertising and promotional information from goSwoop or our partners. Should visitors accept promotional email from goSwoop, any email they receive will include instructions on how to be removed from our promotional email list.
Security and Encryption
We use procedural and technical safeguards to protect your personal information against loss or theft, as well as unauthorized access and disclosure to protect your privacy, including encryption, “firewalls” and Secure Socket Layers (SSL). (to learn more about SSL, please visit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Sockets_Layer.) While we use many different security techniques to protect such data from unauthorized access by users, you understand that “perfect security” does not exist on the Internet.
