I think prospective students should speak with people who have recently gone through the application or selection process.

College representatives are also extremely helpful. They are very willing to answer general questions in addition to questions about their own university.
a
Keep in mind that people who have gone to college, even if it was twenty (20) years ago, often believe that they are experts in college admissions. I think it’s best to get a lot of opinions, filter out the best ones and go from there.

There are some independent counselors out there who are very good. I don’t recommend using an agent who are affiliated with certain universities and that’s because they’re usually recruiters. They get commission if you end up attending the university or college that they represent.
a
If you don’t have a counselor in your school and there is an independent counselor in your area who is not affiliated with a university, that might be a good way to go. I certainly encourage students to show interest in the colleges they’re applying to and if you’re an international student that’s often going to be through e-mail.
a
I also encourage you to find out as much as they can about colleges on the internet, especially if they can’t come and visit you in person.
