I think a year before, starting the research is great. That way by the time the applications come out, either in July or August, you have 4 or 5 months to complete the application very well.

Definitely finish with a month to spare with the deadline. You need to give your high school time to get your documents together. You need time for shipping if you’re sending it by courier. You also want some extra time in case you are missing something or if you didn’t fill something out correctly. You want to give time for the college to get back to you and let you know something is missing.

If you are coming from an international location you want to send by FedEx or DHL, something that you can track because the colleges and universities are receiving so many applications and materials that sometimes they get lost in the shuffle. If you have that tracking number and the college sends you an email saying they never received your application, you have that tracking number to say, “yes you have, you’ve signed for it and this is when you received it.”
